14 years of Celepsa: Economic and social impact on the Peruvian electricity sector

Lima, April 2024 - Celepsa, a UNACEM Group company, celebrates its fourteenth anniversary, highlighting its solid presence and profound impact on the country's economy and society. Within the framework of this celebration, it is important to highlight the fundamental role of the electricity sector in driving the social and economic development of the country.

In the last five years alone, this sector's revenue increased by 47%, and its behavior is directly correlated to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), where it contributes 2% to the Peruvian economy. At the national level, electricity production, where the company plays a leading role, emerges as a leading indicator, linked to the country's GDP.

According to the analysis of INEI's input-output matrix, it is estimated that for each unit produced in the electricity sector, an impact of 1.8 is generated in the economy as a whole. In other words, for each new sol of income generated in the electricity sector, it is estimated that an average of 1.8 new soles are generated, including indirect impacts on the other sectors of the economy. In this way, and taking into consideration Celepsa's operation in 2023 with its El Platanal and Marañón hydroelectric plants, it is estimated that it generated an indirect impact on the national economy that on average amounts to 980 million soles.

In addition, the availability and efficiency in the production of electricity are key indicators of national development and require a reliable infrastructure and varied professional skills, promoting business competitiveness. Celepsa's commitment to the country's development is reflected in the investment in energy and non-energy infrastructure which, according to MINEM, amounts to US$416 million since the construction of the El Platanal power plant.

This has not only boosted economic growth, but has also generated employment and contributed to the social welfare of the population. Within the energy sector, 2.7% of employees of generating companies are thanks to the operation of Celepsa. While the employment generation ratio in this sector is 1.7 people for each megawatt of installed power, according to MINEM statistics.

From the sustainable aspect, the company has carried out outstanding initiatives together with strategic allies, which has generated more than 46 million soles for activities such as local capacity building, awareness campaigns, conservation, productive projects and infrastructure.

One of the emblematic projects was carried out through the Patronato, in the conservation of ecosystems in the Nor Yauyos Cochas Landscape Reserve, where more than 25,000 hectares of green infrastructure have been recovered, more than 32 kilometers of infiltration canals have been rehabilitated, and livestock has been managed for the benefit of more than 130 local ranchers.

The company's presence extends beyond the macroeconomic figures, penetrating deeply into the local communities. The districts of Allauca, Zúñiga and Tanta, areas of direct influence, have experienced the benefits of Celepsa's activity, reflected in the payment of property taxes, which constitutes approximately 50% of the total collected in these areas. In recent years, the company has contributed more than 2.7 million soles in property taxes, demonstrating its commitment to local development and its contribution to tax collection.
