The organization aims to showcase the country's best sustainable initiatives and projects that are linked with one or more of the 17 SDGs.

Lima, September 1st, 2021 - As part of its efforts to promote the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 in the country, Sustainable Peru awarded for the third consecutive year to the companies whose programs and projects merited the "Peru for Sustainable Development" (PODS) recognition, in the categories of people, planet, prosperity, peace and covenants.

Recognition in the Planet category

In this edition Celepsa has been recognized in the planet category, thanks to the project on the Patronato de la Reserva Paisajística Nor Yauyos Cocha (RPNYC), which, developed since 2009, promotes an integrated management of water resources, aimed at promoting the conservation of ecosystems that provide water services to the Department of Lima.

The reserve is regarded as one of the most important ecosystems in the region because it contains 80% of the snow-capped mountains, 62% of the lagoons, and 66% of the main wetlands, making it a vital source of water in the Lima Department.

The main issue observed in the RPNYC is a decrease in the area's water catchment and storage capacity.

During low water levels and flooding episodes, families' activities are limited, resulting in the loss of cultural management practices for the use of space and the degradation of wetlands, grasslands, and peat bogs.

"As a result, entities such as Celepsa were required to take action and help with the preservation of the Landscape Reserve, beginning with basic activities such as water regulation and the improvement or construction of hydraulic infrastructures to combat these problems," Lorena Gavio, Celepsa's Sustainability Assistant Manager, explained.

Celepsa's activities in the area help to restore, conserve, and protect terrestrial ecosystems, inland freshwater ecosystems, and the ecosystem services they provide.

In line with the SDGs

Celepsa recognizes the importance of working in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is why it contributes to SDG 6 - clean water and sanitation - while also focusing on other goals such as poverty relief, sustainable cities and communities, responsible reproduction and consumption, climate action, terrestrial ecosystem life, and others.

Cattle and agriculture are two of the most important sources of revenue for the RPNYC's communities, both of which rely heavily on water. As a result, water capture and interception are critical for food and the development of commercial activity in the area.

Many programs are also directly focused on the conservation of native wildlife, livestock management, the conservation of Andes crops, and the promotion of organized tourism. These activities can thus be carried out throughout the year. Celepsa's presence on the Board of Trustees enables these efforts to take place.
