Lima, December 2022— Even though the International Energy Agency estimates that the world's energy-related carbon dioxide emissions reached 36.3 billion tons in 2021, an increasing number of businesses in the electricity industry are now looking to cut their carbon emissions and making commitments to becoming carbon neutral in the short and medium term.

Celepsa was the first electricity generator company in Peru to offset its overall carbon footprint. As a result, they have received the "Carbon Neutrality Certification" from Aenor, which supports the compensation of 100% of its administrative and operational emissions for the year 2021.

"Since our inception, we have been one of the main actors in the fight against the effects of climate change in the country by generating 100% renewable and clean energy. Being carbon neutral is widely acknowledged as one of the most significant achievements for businesses committed to the fight against climate change. In 2022, we can say that reaffirming our purpose, we have achieved it," Eduardo Herrera, general manager of Celepsa, a company of the Unacem Group, commented.

Aenor (Spanish Association for Standardization and Certification) Certification is based on the PAS 2060 methodology, which verifies the correct calculation of emissions, evaluates carbon footprint management processes, and validates reduction commitments and actions within companies.

"Today, more than ever, we maintain our purpose of accelerating the decarbonization of the country, supported by a business strategy based on sustainability across the organization and transcendent with our stakeholders. We invite more private companies, public entities, and civil society actors to join us in this effort to make Peru a carbon-neutral country by 2050," added Herrera.

Celepsa received the final concession to build its "Solimana Photovoltaic Solar Power Plant" in Arequipa.

To accelerate the country's decarbonization, Celepsa received the final concession from the Ministry of Energy and Mines to develop energy-producing activities at its Solimana Photovoltaic Solar Power Plant.

This power plant will have a capacity of 250 MW and will be located in the district of Ocoña, Camaná, in Arequipa. The project is connected to the SEIN through the Ocoña Substation and a transmission line of approximately 31 kilometers, contemplating an investment of approximately US$226 million for its construction.

With the concession obtained, Celepsa expects to begin coordinating with suppliers and seeking financing to proceed with the construction of the project as soon as possible.

"We estimate that our plant will be operational in December 2025. The photovoltaic plant will be one of the largest and most significant solar power plants in the south of the country, with approximately 434,112 solar panels. Due to its size and the ambition of this project, we have chosen Arequipa because it is a department with high potential for sustainable energy generation," concluded Celepsa's general manager.
